How do you turn a rendering into furniture and joinery?

Move from a reference image to a producible package through dimensions, construction details, finish samples and approved drawings.

The practical answer

A rendering describes the intended appearance. Production also needs dimensions, construction details, materials, hardware and approval records. Use the image as a starting point, then resolve the details through drawings and samples before committing to a batch.

Keep the image, add the missing information

Renderings can communicate proportion, mood and finish direction. They rarely specify every joint, interior fitting, fixing, tolerance or interface. Begin by deciding which items are being developed and which elements are only surrounding context.

For each item, record the required dimensions, function, material direction and any detail that must stay true to the design. An existing floor plan or measured elevation makes the brief more useful. For loose furniture, include intended use and any site access restrictions.

Choose what needs a sample

Material appearance changes with lighting, surface treatment and natural variation. A physical finish sample is useful when colour, sheen or texture is central to the design. Natural wood veneer has variation; confirm the appearance you will accept rather than expecting every surface to be identical.

A prototype or mock-up may be appropriate for repeated, complex or visually sensitive items. Agree its purpose and approval criteria before making it. A sample can resolve one detail without proving the entire package.

  • Finish sample: colour, sheen, texture and natural variation.
  • Shop drawing: dimensions, sections, interfaces and hardware.
  • Prototype or mock-up: form, construction or a repeated design detail.
  • Approved item schedule: quantity, reference and current revision.

Use one approval record

Keep approved drawings, finishes and item references together. Record revisions clearly and identify who can approve a change. A comment made in a chat should be transferred into the agreed record so production does not rely on an ambiguous message.

If the site changes after approval, pause the affected item and assess the consequences for cost, schedule and fit. A revised rendering alone is not a revised production instruction.

What NOVARTE can review

Send the rendering alongside drawings, intended dimensions and the products you want to develop. We can review the proposed supply package, identify missing inputs and discuss the appropriate next step for drawings, materials or sampling.

Agree the specifications, materials and approval process so the intended appearance can be assessed against a clear production brief.

Common questions

Can I request a quote from only an image?+

An image can begin a conversation. A useful quotation needs a defined item, dimensions, quantity and specification assumptions. Production requires a more complete approval record.

Can natural wood veneer match a rendering exactly?+

A rendering cannot define all natural grain and colour variation. Use actual finish samples and agree the acceptable range before production.
